Friday March 16
Our friend Ed Bedner, hard working and brilliant auto company engineer and bigwig, stopped by Pijnacker today on his way home from a 3 week stint in Sweden. His company and 6 others have test tracks of frozen lakes near the Arctic Circle and they busy themselves making sure that our cars work safely in all conditions, and inventing/testing new things. Ed arranged to stopover in Amsterdam on Thursday night, spend Friday with us, and head to Brighton on Saturday. It was so much fun to see him, and to see a familiar face in our new home so far away. Ed had been away for a long time, so we were extra appreciative that he came by.
He arrived around 11am with a huge bouquet of flowers for me and a pretty, traditional textile towel/wall hanging from Sweden for our house. He also had coins and stamps for Danny (fun fact, Sweden in the EU, but not on the Euro- it is kroners). We took him for a walk in to Pijnacker and showed him our sights, shops, church, bakery, etc. We bought him some frittjes at Nicky’s and sat at a table outside so he could try the local favourite. He preferred the frittjes sauce to the curry ketchup and he loved the frittjes! We walked home and Jerry had gotten home from work. I served my Lenten plate of egg salad, cheese, crab salad, cukes and tomatoes and crackers and bread to the hungry group. We then set off for Delft where we visited Neuw Kirke on the Markt square. We toured the church where William of Orange was buried after he was murdered in 1564. The place is huge and has tons of grave stones in the floors and beautiful but simple stain glass windows. We walked along the olde delft road where the house all open right onto the canals and saw the outside of the ould kirke. The canals and bridges in this town are much like you would picture Holland in your mind, very classic.
I made some fish and salad for dinner and we played a bunch of UNO and saw Ed’s photos of reindeer and other Swedish sites, and had a chance to share some of ours from last summer in Greece and Rome.
We had such a great time with him, and it was just so great to sit around and visit.
Other friends reading this…please come to visit!!!!
