Raise your hand if you have heard of Korfball...

Korfball, invented in 1901 by an Amsterdam schoolmaster, Nico Broekhuysen, is a game comparable to netball and basketball with one major exception - the game is designed to be played by mixed teams. It was designed by Nico Broekhuysen in this way because he wanted a game which could be played by his schoolchildren where both boys and girls were able to compete on an equal footing within the same game.
It was first demonstrated in Holland in 1902, just a few years after James Naismith invented basketball in the USA. A national association was formed in Holland in 1903 and soon the game spread to almost 40 other countries, including Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Germany, India, Indonesia, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Taiwan and USA.
WHO KNEW???!!!!
Since world championships began being played 9 out of 10 have been won by the Netherlands. This sport is extremely popular here. A co-worker of Jerry's is the President of the National Korfball Assoc. and Oranjewoud is a major sponsor of Korfball Dag 2012. So, we got VIP passes to the day long tourney and it was held right here in our little town of Pijnacker. The passes included lunch and dinner (which was really exciting to the kids!) The games were held outside and played on AstroTurf, smaller than a soccer field, larger than a BBall court. By mid-way through our first match Jerry was already wishing he could coach, he had some great strategies! The sun was shining and the fans were nuts, as they are at every Dutch sport competition. Example-red team on the field. In the end zone folks all dressed in red, beating a tomtom and doing crazy chants. One fellow, about 6 ft. 5 is wearing a red teletubby costume which ends just below his knees and whenever the team scores, he runs back and forth leading a wave-awesome!)
This was really a slice of Dutch culture for us!
